4102014_91506_0.pngDear Parents:
Every day thousands of students walk safely
to and from school here in Hillsborough County.
It's a healthy habit that provides great exercise,
and it's good for the environment.

However, sometimes students take unnecessary chances
by ignoring some simple rules of the road,
such as not crossing at a marked crosswalk.
All too often that ends in tragedy.  Though it is rare, occasionally
a student is killed or seriously injured trying to cross a busy street.
Most of the injuries or deaths could have been prevented.
Here are some simple safety tips:Always cross at marked crosswalks.
Obey pedestrian signals that indicate when and where to cross

Look left, right, then left again!

That way, you make sure the road is clear in both directions.
If a vehicle approaches, make eye contact with the driver
to be sure they see you before you cross.
Take a second look before walking past stopped vehicles.
Do not cross just because a driver waves you on.
Be sure all lanes are clear first.

By following some of these simple rules,
students can get to and from school safely and avoid becoming a statistic.
Please join us in working to keep children safe.
